Randy over at Box Wrestle Fence had a great post today – granted they’re all great, and what are you doing reading my blog, his is much better go read it – but within today’s was a brief reminder about the same thing Swetnam and every other period master talked about: practice.

[S]omethings you only learn by doing. The hands themselves have to learn.

When learning fencing, or baking, or cooking your hands need to learn what they’re doing.  I can tell you a hundred times how I kneed bread.  That won’t mean you know how to do it.  I can TELL you a hundred times how to make a proper parry, but until you DO it a hundred times you won’t know it.
